Artist Statement

Ana Maria Mariani –

My art is all about color and texture. Whether I am working with oil or acrylic on wood or canvas, or I am creating art with my wood poles covered in textiles, I need to wrap myself in color and texture. The characteristics of the materials I use to create transport me to those wonderful places I’ve visited and to those I dream of visiting.
I am an autodidact, and I love to study the works of the really talented (like Sheila Hicks) and also of those whom shall soon be well-known for their talents.
When at home, I spend hours and hours on the internet checking out the latest trends in art and fashion, and when traveling I can’t get enough inspiration from galleries and museums.
In my creative process there is an important period of internal struggle at the moment of initiating every new piece, and it is framed by my deep desire to capture all of my observations of current art trends, emotional state, vision for the specific piece, passion for perfection, and finally the color combinations existing in my mind and that of the final texture that I wish to communicate. Once I start the piece, I am lost in time and space. The last stage of my creative process is letting go…that very difficult step of allowing myself to walk away and declare the piece concluded.
